As the last Halloween pumpkins disappear, Christmas takes over — from supermarket shelves to the streets of Copenhagen. And with it comes one of Denmark’s long lasting traditions, when the Christmas beers starts flowing and the blue hats make their yearly appearance around Copenhagen: julebryg season.
Next week, both ØJ-Dag and J-Dag hit Nordvest — two days marking the start of the julebryg season. J-Dag was launched in the 1990s by Tuborg, when bars, bodegas, and beer lovers across the country toast the official release of the Christmas brew at exactly 20:59. ØJ-Dag came later, in 2003, born from Ølbaren in Nørrebro as a craft beer alternative — “Ø” standing for Ølentusiaster (beer enthusiasts). It’s a celebration of quality over quantity, where microbreweries and independent bars highlight rich, seasonal juleøl.
In Nordvest, both days have something to offer. If you’re into craft beer, Thursday’s ØJ-Dag is your pick — with celebrations at Gamma NV, Nordvest Ølbar, and Urban Camper. If you prefer the full classic julebryg vibe, Friday’s J-Dag is for you — from Urban Camper to brown bodegas like Viggo’s Bar and Café Fuglereden, where the taps will be flowing late into the night.
