Very Early Bird Eats: 10 Spots for Breakfast Before Work in Nordvest

We’ve all been there: You want to catch up with a friend before the workday starts, but many cafes in town don't open until 9:00 or 10:00 AM. If you need to be at your desk by 9:30, and you don't want a 30 minute catch-up, you need a place that’s ready when you are.

I’m lucky enough to work close to home, but even for me, finding an 8:00 AM (or earlier!) coffee and a bun can be a challenge in NV! Here is my list of where to meet when the sun is just coming up.

1. Urban Camper – The Earliest (and Cheapest!)

Opens: 07:00

If you are an extreme early bird, this is your spot. Since it’s a hostel, they start breakfast early. At 65 DKK, it’s the best value in the neighborhood. It’s a classic "hostel spread": think different types of bread, meats, cheeses, jams, fruit, yogurt, and muesli. It’s simple, vegan-friendly, and perfect if you just need a low-key place to sit and chat at dawn.

2. Bagt (Nørrebro Bycenter) – The Practical Choice Opens: 07:00 Located right by Nørrebro Station, this is the ultimate convenience spot. It’s a bakery chain, so while you won't find a specialty sourdough bun here, they have all the reliable basics. It’s perfect for a super early morning catch-up if you’re heading straight onto the S-train afterward.

3. Flere Fugle – The 7:30 Favorite

Opens: 07:30 (8:00 on weekends)

This is my personal go-to on the way home from a run. Because they open at 7:30, it’s rarely crowded first thing in the morning. Their Chai Latte is my absolute favorite everywhere, and their sourdough buns (BMO) are legendary. It’s a great "fast" option if you’re heading toward the station.

4. Thoras (Thoravej 29) – The Design Gem

Opens: 08:00 (9:00 on weekends)

This is where I recently met a friend for breakfast (and gave me the idea for this article as I was doing research on what was open early!) It’s a stunning, architecturally interesting building - seriously, Google the story of Thoravej 29, it has a whole history of its own! It’s rarely "packed" at 8:00 AM, so you get your coffee and food fast in a beautiful, quiet setting.

5. Tekno Eatery – The Work-Day Classic

Opens: 08:00 (Mon–Fri)

Located right across from Flere Fugle, Tekno is a daytime powerhouse. It’s a popular spot for people working in the area, but at 8:00 AM, it’s a peaceful place for a meeting. I’ve had breakfast here with a friend who lives in the South of Copenhagen and works in Østerbro—it was the perfect practical detour for him. Note: Closed on weekends!

6. Kaffedepartementet – The Roastery Vibe

Opens: 08:00 (Daily)

If you are serious about your beans, head here. While places like Flere Fugle have a "meetup" vibe, Kaffedepartementet feels like a place where things get done: you’ll often see people working from the small tables. Maybe an early work meeting? They recently added matcha lattes to the menu, and their pastries are top-tier. In my opinion, they have one of the best tebirkes in town.

7. Fovl – The Commuter’s Choice

Opens: 08:00 (8:30 on weekends)

Owned by the same team as Flere Fugle, so you’re guaranteed the same high-quality coffee and bread. It’s located on Frederikssundsvej and feels a bit more like a "passage" spot—perfect for a quick, high-quality meeting before jumping on the bus or bike to head into the city.

8. Storm B – The Cozy Choice

Opens: 08:00

If you want something that feels like a warm hug before work, go to Storm B. It’s incredibly cozy and on the less expensive side, so you don't have to break the bank to enjoy a quiet morning moment.

9. Egestrand Café & Tehus – The Highly-Rated Local

Opens: 08:00 (9:00 on weekends)

Located on Tagensvej, this is one I still need to try myself, but it comes with very high ratings. It seems less "fancy" than some of the newer spots, but the reviews suggest they are quite generous with their food. Definitely worth checking out for a true local vibe.

10. Bonus: Skruens (The "To-Go" Wildcard)

Opens: 07:30 (Thursday & Friday ONLY)

If you just need a filter coffee and a BMO to-go, Skruens is great. However, there’s no seating, and they are only open early at the end of the week.

But! Catch them while you can: The owner recently announced a move to Jutland, so this bakery likely won't be open for much longer!
