Behind the Brews at Gamma: A Very Good Way to Spend a Wednesday Evening

Last week we went to the Behind the Brews tasting at Gamma, which takes place every month on the first Wednesday. I had seen the event a few times before and always assumed it would be a bigger group, a bit like their trivia nights or karaoke evenings, which tend to fill the whole bar.
But this was actually something completely different.
When we arrived, we were guided to a small table in the back, and it turned out the tasting was a group of about eight people in total, plus Chris, who was hosting the evening. It immediately felt much more intimate than I expected — in the best possible way.
For the next two hours, we tasted a series of Gamma beers while Chris walked us through them: the stories behind the brews, how they think about developing new beers, and what actually matters most in different styles. Sometimes it's the hops, sometimes it's the balance, sometimes it's something else entirely.
Some of the questions people asked were more “general brewing questions,” the kind of things you might not need to ask twice if you come back another time. But I imagine that the more you learn about beer, the more interesting and specific the questions probably become. Either way, it never felt repetitive — just like a very relaxed conversation around a table.
Chris was also a fantastic host. I’m not sure if he leads every Behind the Brews event, but if he does, I would definitely recommend going when he’s running it. He has a great way of making everyone feel comfortable and keeping the atmosphere easy and welcoming.
Another small bonus: we ended up tasting a few more beers than what was listed in the event description, which is always a pleasant surprise.
Fried Chicken Intermission
At some point during the tasting, we also ordered food from Ray’s Chicken, which is located in the same space.
Originally we placed the order right when we arrived because we thought the tasting would be a much bigger event and that people might be eating throughout. But when we realized we were actually sitting around a small table of eight people, we asked if it would be possible to delay the order.
Not only was it possible — they actually held our order for over two hours, which was incredibly kind.
When the tasting was wrapping up, the food arrived: a fried chicken sandwich that was juicy, generous in size, and exactly what you want after a few beers. The fries were crispy, salty, and very satisfying.
Honestly, it worked out perfectly!
A Local Connection
One of the things I also loved hearing about was Chris’s own story. He lives in Nordvest, has previously worked in a company related to brewing, and works as a brewer at Gamma’s brewery in Herlev, which felt like a nice local connection.
Naturally, I couldn’t resist asking if he’d be up for an interview for the blog — so hopefully that’s something we’ll be able to share in the coming weeks.
Would I Go Again? Absolutely.
Behind the Brews turned out to be a really lovely way to spend a Wednesday evening. It’s relaxed, informal, and just the right mix of learning something new while also enjoying a few good beers.
You could easily go:
with a friend
with a partner
alone
or even as a small group (if you book early enough, you might end up filling the whole table).
I’ll definitely be back for another one.
