Bellahøj Svømmestadion: Affordable, Efficient, and National Team-Approved

Updated: 3 days ago

I first discovered Bellahøj Svømmestadion in the spring of 2014, during my exchange semester in Copenhagen. With classes wrapped up and exam prep looming, I made it my ritual to go swimming every day before hitting the books. Living on Møntmestervej, it was just a short 5-minute walk — and before I knew it, I was hooked on the routine. When I moved back to Copenhagen two years later, I often thought about returning to the pool. But somehow, it never quite made it back into my regular schedule — until now.

Recently, I’ve started going back to Bellahøj every Wednesday. After struggling with running-related injuries, I realized I needed a low-impact workout that could give me a break without giving up movement entirely. Swimming felt like the perfect solution — and, I suppose, proof that sometimes, we really do live and learn!

Bellahøj is, I believe, the largest swimming center in Copenhagen — if not Denmark. It has both a 25-meter and a 50-meter pool, with eight lanes in the latter. The changing rooms include a sauna, which you can enjoy before or after your swim (a definite plus in winter). One of the best things? The “green times” — specific hours during the week where entry is just 31 DKK instead of the usual 57 DKK. You can check these online (link below), and if you plan to go regularly, a yearly pass is definitely worth considering. (We’ll see how long I keep this up!)

From June 1st to August 31st, they also open the outdoor pool, complete with a slide — and I’m really looking forward to swimming under the open sky soon.

Personally, I’ve found that on Wednesdays and Fridays, four lanes are open during green time starting at 8:00 AM. I show up right at opening, am in and out in just over an hour, and still make it to work before 9:30. It’s a pretty efficient and energizing start to the day.

And the extra cool factor? You’re often swimming right next to members of the Danish national team. Cool points by association, right?

The less glamorous bit? Coming from inner Nordvest, the hill leading up to the pool can feel like a cruel joke — especially when it’s raining. But after a swim, gliding back down with tired legs is a strangely satisfying reward.
